Welcome to the Ito DojoMy name is Toshiyuki Ito. I have been training and teaching martial arts and physical training for more than 40 years. I came to Australia in 1993 to start an MMA club after retiring from fighting in Japan. I believe at that time it was the first MMA club in Australia. I am also a personal trainer as well. I'm teaching people how to get fit, have a healthy life style, and healthy eating, etc. I think health and fitness are the most important priorities for every person. If you are healthy and fit, you have 100% energy everyday and are able to enjoy your life more. |
Your productivity goes up, so whatever you do you can use your full ability all the time. First of all, you feel good!!
If you are getting sick all the time, you can't even come to training much, and can't improve.
Before becoming a good fighter, you have to be healthy and fit first.

Another thing I focus on instructing is the mind. It’s very important for fighting and learning Martial Arts. I mean it’s important for everyone because our mind does a lot of things to us. If we improve our mind, we can improve much better physically.
Japanese Martial Arts philosophies, mindset and meditation (these were greatly influenced by Zen monks about 500 years ago) and are very useful tools to improve our mind. Martial Arts were originally designed for killing people in battle for SAMURAI warriors. If you got scared or panicked, you got killed straight away in battle, so they put great emphasis on improving their mind. They developed very useful tools to improve their mind to help maximising fighting performance. They also considered the good warriors were polite, humble and kind to other people. I think the meaning of learning Martial Arts now is not just about self-defence and fighting, that’s only one part, It’s to be a better and nicer person and is the way of learning life skills. The last few years I have been organising a trip to Japan for my students, this allows them to have the experience of training and even competing there. I have made this training trip a regular event for my gym, as it is not only an opportunity to improve your fighting skills but to experience a different culture. We always have a great time and family are welcome as well. I’m looking forwards to meeting you and helping you to achieve your goal. Who is Toshiyuki Ito ? “ The instructor’s instructor "
Toshiyuki Ito grew up in the rough streets of Tokyo Japan, and soon learnt how to protect himself from danger.
He learnt his lessons at the “School of hard Knocks”. It was a very rough school where fights broke out all the time. One on one fights, Multiple fights, and sometimes weapons were involved.
Toshiyuki was training in Judo at that time, but he realized he needed to learn more skills for any kind of attacks.
Then, he was taken in and mentored by one of Japan’s greatest Martial Arts master Hidetaka Aso at the legendary MMA gym “Submission Arts Wrestling”, and as a teen started his fighting career.
Through lot’s of fighting and competitions, he got another realisation and insights about how to “Not only win but stay unharmed” because sometimes he had to have multiple fights in one day like 7 or 8 fights. Another time, he had fights two weekends in a row.
He realised how important it is to stay unharmed to be able to keep fighting regularly, and for long term. That means learning good techniques and good strategies.
Having reached the representative Shihan (Daihyo Shihan 代表師範 Grand Master) in the International Submission Arts Wrestling Federation, Toshiyuki is now sharing his knowledge at his dojo in Brisbane.
Beginners, other Martial Arts instructors, Police officers, security guards, Prison guards, or people who are experienced in different styles of Martial Arts are learning Toshiyuki’s life long deep knowledge.

Toshiyuki ito is my oldest student, and I have appointed him as the representative Shihan (Daihyo Shihan 代表師範 Grand Master) of SAW and the president of the International Submission Arts Wrestling Federation. So, his dojo in Australia is the SAW world headquarters now.
He started training with me when he was a teenager.
He had great striking technique, and his submission technique was outstanding out of all my students.
He was a lightweight fighter but I think at one stage, his explosive power was even stronger than me.

I have trained in Martial Arts for over 30 years, and have earned multiple black belts in multiple styles, include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Shootwrestling, as well as trained many years in other grappling styles such as Judo and Wrestling. However the knowledge of Shihan Toshi in Submission Arts Wrestling is so unique and special that I became his student and started to learn again from white belt in 2013. He is one of the most senior students of Submission Arts Wrestling (SAW) in the world and has continued to evolve and adapt his teaching style based on his own matches and those of his students. I highly recommend anybody interested in learning a complete no gi grappling system that works in grappling tournaments, MMA bouts and Street Self Defence to train with Shihan Toshi. He is a very patient and friendly teacher and is keen to help anybody that asks. This is why I call him Sensei.
